As a personal trainer, I spend a lot of time in the gym. It would seem logical that the only thing I need to get inspired is a quick look around me to start a workout. Thanks to my line of work, I’m always prepared to train—dressed in the right clothes, in the right environment, etc., but even I need a boost to get myself going sometimes. I’ve got a few motivating tools that I keep stashed in my gym bag just in case I need to set the mood.
Skin Fold Calipers: This baby is either my client’s best friend or worst nightmare! A quick series of pinches gives me the numbers, and even I can’t deny what they mean. Either I need to GET moving and make more progress, or I need to KEEP moving to stay on track. Either way, the calipers are a no-nonsense test to measure how close you are to reaching your body composition goals.
Favorite Reads: I love No Nonsense and Oxygen magazines, and always have a copy with me to reference for inspiration. For a surefire workout when I’m not feeling creative, I keep The Ultimate Kettleball Workbook on hand. It has been the best cardiovascular workout for me, and my clients love the switch-up when I do it for them.
Lifting Gloves: I don’t always wear them, but I keep them on hand in case I’m “feeling” the gloves. Sometimes an accessory is just what I need to get into the right mindset.
Ear Buds: TWO SETS! You never know when a set is about to go, and for me, music is a MUST for working out. It enables me to be focused in my training, and go through my workout uninterrupted.
Sugar-Free Gum, Vitamin C Drops, Lip Gloss and Chapstick: What can I say, I’m all about a happy mouth!
Amino Drink: This helps me keep good energy all day, and maintain my daily BCAA consumption.
Pill Case: I’ve got a lot of supplements that need to be with me at all times. I’m on the hunt for a pretty pink or purple case.
Lotion and Deodorant: Sweaty is sexy, stinky is not!
